With the Pittsfield Turkey Tourney behind them, the Hannibal boys’ basketball team got its regular season underway on Monday night in Highland. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the outcome wasn’t what Hannibal wanted as the Pirates lost 61-58.
The opening quarter was a close battle as the Pirates traded baskets with the Cougars. At the end of the first quarter, Hannibal trailed Highland by three points, 18-15.
Things fell apart in the second quarter though as Highland outscored Hannibal 16-5 to take a commanding 34-20 lead into the break.
Senior Dalton Powell got things going for Hannibal in the second half as he scored 16 points in the final 16 minutes of play. Powell finished the night with a game-high 25 points, including six three-pointers.
“(Dalton Powell) played really really well offensively in the second half,” Hannibal coach Matt Pugh said. “I thought our guys did a nice job of finding him a little bit more in the second half.”
The Pirates got things going again in the third quarter, outscoring Highland 15-8, but it wasn’t enough. Heading into the final eight minutes of the game, the Pirates still trailed 42-35.
“I really like the way we bounced back in the second half,” Pugh said. “I thought we played a pretty good second half and hopefully we can build off of that.”
Hannibal continued to battle Highland throughout the fourth quarter, several times getting within two points of the Cougars, but the Pirates were never able to tie the game up. Hannibal outscored Highland 23-19 in the fourth quarter.
“I think we did a nice job of obviously knocking down some shots,” Pugh said. “But we did a nice job of playing inside out a little bit. We got Nate Voss involved and he really came on late in the second half.”
Also finishing in double figures for Hannibal were Lijah Harrison and Eric Hugenberg. Both players scored 11 points for the Pirates. Coming off the bench, Voss chipped in 7 points for Hannibal, all in the second half.
After playing five games over the last seven days, Hannibal will have a week off. The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4 with a road trip to Kirksville.
