  • Vera F. Harlow, 88, of New London, Mo., died at 12:42 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer and other illnesses at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

  • Vera F. Harlow, 88, of New London, Mo., died at 12:42 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer and other illnesses at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the New London First Christian Church with Pastor Tom Day officiating. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, Mo.
    Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel of Hannibal.
    Mrs. Harlow was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Shelby County, Mo., to Grover and Pearl Pope Wolfe.
    She married William L. (Bill) Harlow and he survives. The Harlows had celebrated 67 years of marriage.
    Other survivors include one daughter, Carla (Gary E.) Van Meter of St. Charles, Mo.; three grandchildren, Ryan Van Meter of San Francisco, Calif., Garrett (Kasey) Van Meter of St. Peters, Mo., and Stephen Harlow of St. Charles Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Janice Harlow Cohen of St. Charles, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Faith and Alex Harlow. Two sisters survive, Bob Ruth Gann of New London and Joan Brown of Payson, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Harlow was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William L. Harlow Jr.; two sisters, Bernice Landess and Ruby Hendren; and four brothers, Cecil Wolfe, Warren Wolfe, Otis Wolfe and John Wolfe.
    Mrs. Harlow graduated from New London High School, Class of 1943. She worked for more than 20 years at the Kroger Store in Hannibal, where she was head checker and, at retirement, worked in the office.
    Vera was a devoted member of the New London First Christian Church. She loved the church dearly and was a faithful servant in many ways. Vera was a deacon, president of C.W.F., managed newsletter distribution and was in charge of the church flea market. She was also in charge of the monthly service circle luncheon as well as fellowship and bereavement dinners.
    Vera loved her home and everyone knew that family and friends were always welcome to stop by to visit. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning and watching and feeding birds. Vera will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
    Pallbearers will be R.C. Harlow, Ron Hendren, David Lacy, Mark Rubemeyer, Garrett Van Meter and Ryan Van Meter.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Flowerree, Stephen Harlow, Bert Howard, Dave Jarman, Gary Van Meter, Gaylord Winders and John Zedailis.
    Memorials may be made to the New London First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society, in care of Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
