Some might say that it's just a ploy to get people to spend more money, but I don't see it that way at all. Many baseball teams have been incorporating alternate uniforms a lot recently. Some have been replicas of the past and others — like the Cardinals — are a mixture of old and new. But overall it's all about a nostalgic look, and I love that baseball teams are find their own ways of having throwback days.
If you haven't seen this new jersey. It's pretty sweet.
The new jerseys will be worn for Saturday home games and are an off-white color, as they looked in the championship years of the '60s. The pants of the uniform will also have a red stripe along the legs, just as they did in they did in then too. Stripes on the actual jersey are reminiscent of the '50s and of course there's the birds on the bat with not Cardinals, but St. Louis, stitched in script. For the first time since 1932 St. Louis is on the team's uniform and it's something that's been worth the wait when you look at this new uniform.
If I have any criticisms, it would be the "L" in Louis. The "S" in St. hooks onto the bat, but the "L" does not. I'd like to see both letters hugging the bat, but hey I'm no designer. Other than that, it's great.
You have take into perspective how special this is for many. For more than 80 years St. Louis has not been part of the uniform and this is a new experience for all who have seen the Cardinals throughout life. Those of my generation and my parents have never seen this before, and for some, even our grandparents never experienced the St. Louis stitching. The only St. Louis reference in the team's uniform has been in the forever popular interlocking "STL" on the caps. Some seniors may remember St. Louis on the uniforms, but when I think of my grandparents, I figure my grandfathers were 9 and 14 and my grandmothers were 6 and 11 the last time the Cardinals boasted their city on their jerseys — a lot's happened since then. Factor in there was no TV and no media everywhere you looked, this is kind of new for everyone.
The team also announced the navy blue road caps would now be alternates and that the red caps would be the full time caps for the players. The use of the Sunday cap for home games doesn't change.
    This idea I also like.
I read on a blog the team maybe considering using the navy blue caps for random games selected by the fans and for get-away games. I really hope the get-away games is something the team considers, I always thought those caps would look great with the home uniforms and would look pretty nice with the new uniforms too.
Page 2 of 2 - There's still a lot of time till next season starts, but like the game itself, this is something to look forward to.
