Marion County Collector Mary Ann Viorel reported county real estate and personal property tax bills were mailed earlier in November. Payment in the form of cash or check may be made by mail or in person at the courthouses in Palmyra and Hannibal. After hours payments may be made in the drop boxes at each courthouse.
Viorel explained that Hannibal residents will notice their bills may seem to be substantially more this year than previous years. She said this is because for the first time Marion County is collecting taxes on behalf of the City of Hannibal, which means residents will not be receiving a separate 2012 city bill.
As usual, taxes will be due by Dec. 31, 2012. As of Jan. 1, 2013, unpaid taxes will be considered delinquent and subject to penalties.
She added that there is a security scanner in place at the courthouse in Hannibal, and anyone who enters the building will be subject to security checks. A wallet or checkbook may be carried in but no purses, electronic devices including cell phones or weapons of any kind.
The collector’s offices in both courthouses are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays including the noon hour. Both courthouses will be closed for scheduled holidays including Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22 and 23, for Thanksgiving; Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24 and 25, for Christmas; and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, for New Year’s Day.
