The baseball memorial that's been in place for more than 40 years is out. And there's a chance it may not return.
Bleigh Construction workers building the new sidewalks downtown have made their way to the Jake Beckley Memorial, and the original plan was to leave it in and work around it. But with machinery getting close, Hannibal Parks and Recreation Director Andy Dorian isn't taking any chances.
As pictures for this story were being taken Monday afternoon, the monument appeared to be off its foundation. The Courier-Post brought the matter to Dorian's attention, and after viewing it, he made the decision to remove monument to keep it out of harm's way.
"That would be great," a Bleigh site worker said when Dorian told him the monument would be moved out of the way. The monument will be stored at the Parks and Recreation facility until
And that's when something new may come to the site.
Dorian has said before it's possible that a new Jake Beckley Memorial would replace the one being removed and a new location for the monument that's been along Main Street since 1971 could be selected. Stowell Elementary School, built on the site of Beckley's House, remains a possibility.
