  • Diamond Dirt: Trio of homers may be it for Panda

  • Because Sandoval - commonly known as “Kung Fu Panda” - plays in California, I don't think he's going to be remembered for much more unless he eventually becomes a free agent and plays for another team that gets more press.

  • You don't seem to hear much about the West Coast baseball teams unless something big happens or it's the postseason.
That's just how the mainstream media is.
So when Pablo Sandoval hit those three home runs Wednesday night in the World Series, it made major headlines and it has sports fans and those who just admire the feat talking.
But because Sandoval - commonly known as "Kung Fu Panda" - plays in California, I don't think he's going to be remembered for much more unless he eventually becomes a free agent and plays for another team that gets more press.
If he's a Giant for life, it's a good thing, but it could also be a bad thing.
His skills at third. His impacting bat outside of hitting home runs. The leadership and face he brings to the franchise. All of those things, I believe, will be overlooked for things like the Hall of Fame and just being mentioned as a notable player.
If at some point in his career he decides to play for Atlanta, New York — like I said St. Louis or east of there — and he still has enough left in him to be noticed and enough to make an impact. Then his time with that team and the Giants come into play. Until then, he's just a ballplayer.
He should really do something like Frank Robinson did. Be a well-known star with one team and do it all over with another.
That's a sure ticket to true baseball stardom.
