  • Diamond Dirt: No reason to frown

  • If this was the Bronx, we'd all be mad about not making it to the World Series.
But here in Cardinal Nation, we're not spoiled or lonely up on a pedestal. We are proud of the St. Louis Cardinals just for making it to the postseason.

But here in Cardinal Nation, we're not spoiled or lonely up on a pedestal. We are proud of the St. Louis Cardinals just for making it to the postseason. And it wouldn't have mattered if we lost to Washington or lost the World Series, this was a great season.
How many teams can say their rookie manager took them all the way to the do-or-die matchup for the pennant?
    Just the Cardinals.
    Sorry White Sox fans.
How many teams can say their farm system stepped up throughout the season to fill in for hurt players?
    The Cardinals.
Pete Kozma was just another guy on the call-up list who had a few cups of coffee, now he very well could be platooning at shortstop with Rafael Furcal in the final season of his contract.
    Sorry Dodger fans.
Once again, the Cardinals were the team to beat and they proved that they don't have to be the team leading the division to have that recognition. Sure, the Cincinnati Reds won the Central Division this year, just like the Milwaukee Brewers did last year, but no one's going to remember that.
What's going to be remembered is the team's constant competitive play. How they held on to that final second Wild Card spot and knocked out the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals — teams who finished with records far better than the Redbirds.
This was the team who will be remembered as the guys who sent Chipper Jones home in first round of the playoffs in his final season. This was the team who crushed Washington's first chance at playing for a pennant since they moved from Montreal. This is a team who just played ball, lead by Mike Matheny, who lead the way without collapsing to pressure, inexperience or fear.
When you think about it, this is a team whose bulk isn't going anywhere. The names you see on this 2012 roster in particular are going to be a group of players who bring in the 12th World Championship in the team's history.
Will it be next year? Well, that's the hard part of the off-season. We unfortunately have to wait, a while, and see.
