The goals were simple for the students at St. John's Lutheran School.
Sell bring in a lot of money for the school with the annual cookie dough sales and help other schools get new books and get rewarded.
The reward: pieing the principal, Matt Koenig, and watch his wife, the school's pre-kindergarten director, Dawn Koenig, kiss a pig.
Students took the challenge and succeeded.
A total of $5,000 came into the school with cookie dough sales.
"It goes towards the funding of the school for whatever we see fit, and it's nice to keep the operating budget going so that we can expand the ministry here and grow the kids as they learn about Christ and grow the school as we educate the students here in Hannibal," Matt Koenig said. "Cookies sell themselves, that's what it is. To get the cookies out for sale — they've been doing it for years — and so everybody just kind of waits and knows that it's coming. Students enjoy it, they get cool prizes out of it, and they know they're helping the school and they're helping themselves."
Doing all that is what lead to Dawn Koenig to pucker up with Bacon the Pig for a sloppy, wet kiss Friday afternoon.
The students screamed and laughed in excitement as Bacon wasn't shy to receive affection.
But the fun didn't stop there.
There was still a matter of pieing the principal.
"For the pies in the face, what the kids did, was they donated change for what's called the 'All for Books' program," Matt Koenig said. "For every dollar that we get in for money, our school gets fifty cents for a book and another school gets a free book for their school. It goes for the less fortunate schools, inner-city Chicago, places like that.
"You have the kids wanting to read. Reading is fundamental, and it's the basis for the whole educational program. Along with this, the kids were doing 30 minutes of reading, especially in the third and fourth grade, and then just getting the books into their hands, allowing them to read and having fun, the opportunity to have a book they can read is kind of a neat deal."
It was the height of hilarity for the day as Matt Koenig strapped on his pink cartoon fish shower cap and took many swats of whipped cream to the face. Some of the kids even chose sprinkles for their pies. Afterward, Matt Koenig resembled the popular Batman villain The Joker as his face dripped with green, red and white sprinkles and whipped cream. His Ozzie Smith Cardinals T-shirt also took a beating in the fun.
