The Hannibal seventh grade volleyball team picked up another win Thursday night as the Lady Pirates swept Kirksville 25-6, 25-14 to improve to 13-1 on the season.
“We passed the ball very well tonight,” Hannibal seventh grade coach Mary Ann St Clair said. “I think that was our best passing game. Our serves were consistent and our passing was a lot more consistent. We didn’t get a lot of set kills, but at least we weren’t making a lot of unforced errors.”
Shelby Nelson led Hannibal with 17 points, 6 aces, and 2 kills. During the second game with the two teams tied 6-6, Nelson went on a 11 point run a pair of aces to give Hannibal an 18-6 lead.
“Shelby Nelson scored 11 straight points,” St Clair said. “Eleven of her 17 points came in one run during the second game which was big.”
Chloe Ebers finished the night with 10 points and six aces while Jorden Van Winkle contributed 8 points and a pair of aces for Hannibal.
Even though the game was over in straight sets, both schools agreed to play a third set before the night began. In that third set, the score was much closer, but Hannibal won again beating Kirksville 25-22.
“Kirksville got better and better as the evening went on,” St Clair said. “But we were consistent from the beginning.”
Hannibal will conclude its season next week as the Lady Pirates travel to Mexico on Monday before finishing up at Warrenton on Wednesday.
“They have improved so much from two months ago,” St Clair said. “Everybody that has watched them play from coaches and parents and even the kids themselves said they even realize the progress that they have made this season.”

For the first time all season, the Hannibal eighth grade volleyball team lost. The Lady Pirates lost to Kirksville in three sets. Hannibal won the first set 25-9, but lost the next two 25-23, 25-23.
“The girls were pretty upset about (the loss),” Hannibal eighth grade coach Maggie Moon said. “But we get to play Kirksville this Saturday so we are hoping to come back strong against them an play better.”
Kaylee Murphy led the Lady Pirates with 13 points and 8 aces while Patience Johnson had 6 points and one ace for Hannibal.
“We played a different group of girls,” Moon said. “We also tried out a new offense to get us ready for our tournament this weekend. Overall we didn’t play very clean and our transitions were pretty slow and we missed a lot of serves tonight.”
The loss dropped Hannibal to 9-1 on the season as the Lady Pirates head into their tournament this weekend.
“We will have two teams entered in (the tournament),” Moon said. “So we will have a lot of playing time for our girls.”
