  • The cause of an Oct. 5 fire in Saverton that destroyed an unoccupied residence has been listed as “undetermined,” according to Mike O’Connell, a spokesman for the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.
According to the report filed by an investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s office, the cause is “undetermined due to the extent of the damage.”
“They cannot rule out an electrical cause,” said O’Connell.
Reportedly, no utilities were connected to the one-story structure at the time of the fire. That fact prompted Kevin Smith, assistant chief of the Hannibal Rural Fire Protection District, to call the blaze a “little suspicious.”
A neighbor suggested that the early morning fire might have been started by a lightning strike.
The investigator did determine that the fire, which destroyed the structure, started in an attached garage.
Damage was estimated at approximately $5,000.
