Jobs Jobs Jobs
Historically, Democrats are better at producing jobs. At the Democratic convention, President Bill Clinton provided the numbers:
“Well, since 1961, for 52 years now, the Republicans have held the White House 28 years, the Democrats, 24. In those 52 years, our private economy has produced 66 million private sector jobs. So what’s the job score? Republicans, 24 million; Democrats, 42 (million).”
Yet Republicans double down on failed policies. Call it supply-side, trickle down, or Reaganomics. George H.W. Bush famously called it “voodoo economics.” The Bush tax cuts implement voodoo economics. They have been on the books for a decade. If they worked, we would have full employment today, and no recent Great Recession.
In fact, our economy is demand driven, not supply driven. Here’s what really works. In good economic times, the middle-class produces 70% of our economic activity. Buying food, clothing, houses, cars, gas. Raising kids, eating out, taking vacations.
Today, Wall Street and Republican policies have decimated the middle-class. To fix this, we need programs that keep or put money in the pockets of middle-class families. Extending unemployment benefits. Keeping teachers and nurses and police and firefighters employed. Stronger labor unions. Government spending to rebuild roads and bridges and schools. Keeping the cost of education low. Republicans have fought against every one of these policies. Democrats have fought for them.
Republicans have deliberately kept unemployment high. They believe this is their path to victory in November. They vote for themselves, not for America.
