A Hannibal, Mo., tradition that began 64 years ago will continue Tuesday, Oct. 9, when hundreds of student musicians from 28 schools will march down Broadway during the 64th annual Hannibal Band Day parade.
Twenty-eight high school and middle school bands will assemble at Dulaney Park for the two-hour parade, which will begin at 3 p.m.
They will march down Broadway to North Main Street and turn north through the historic district.
The marching bands, from schools in Missouri and Illinois, will include flag and pom pon squads, with each band led by drum majorettes.
Some will be playing during the parade, while others will exhibit their marching skills to a drum cadence.
After the parade, 15 of the bands will remain in Hannibal to present the evening field show at 6 p.m. at Porter Stadium at Hannibal High School.
South Shelby High School will play the National Anthem.
Three schools will perform in parade formation and 12 schools will perform their field shows.
Hannibal High School’s Pirate Pride Marching Band will conclude the festival with its field show, “Led Zeppelin,” at approximately 8:20 p.m.
“People look forward to this annual event, and we have people who plan to attend it every year,” said Debbie Higbee Roberts, HHS band director and festival coordinator.
“We welcome everyone to the parade and the field events in the evening,” she said. “Our students started their field show work in the summer, and band day is the high point of their season, performing for the home town crowd and Hannibal’s visitors.”
Craig Buck, a retired Hannibal band director, and Jack Scheurer of Columbia, Mo., will provide recorded commentary for each group. Both judges have years of experience and adjudicate in several regional venues, according to Kathy Crim, secretary of the Hannibal Band Boosters.
“The public is invited to enjoy an evening of great music,” Crim said.
Admission for the evening show is $5 for adults $2 for students. Children age 3 and under are free.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, candy, soda and bottled water will be available at the Band Boosters concession stand at Porter Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
