  • Jack Keene Evans, 91, of Monroe City, Mo., passed away at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Monroe City Manor, Monroe City, Mo.

  • Jack Keene Evans, 91, of Monroe City, Mo., passed away at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Monroe City Manor, Monroe City, Mo.
    He was born Dec. 11, 1920, in Vandalia, Mo., the son of Paul B. and Louise Anna Keller Evans.
    Jack attended Herford School in Ralls County, Mo. Jack graduated from Hemphill Diesel School of Memphis, Tenn., in 1941.
    He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a radar technician and wheeled vehicle maintenance instructor and later as an automotive mechanic and driver.
    Jack and his brother, Bill, farmed and raised Black Angus cattle in Ralls County for many years. He also worked as a mechanic for C. Ray Anderson.
    In the 1950s he owned and operated the Evans Texaco Service Station in Monroe City, Mo.
    In Jack’s younger years he loved playing cards. He also loved his mechanical work and keeping up with current events.
    He married Jodie Mae Varnadoe May 7, 1944, in Varnado, La. She survives of the home.
    Also surviving are two sons, James Lee Evans and wife, Cheryl, of Urbana, Ill., and John Russell Evans and wife, Jean, Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Taft and husband, Lawrence, Jacksonville, Ill.; two sisters, Wanda Werner and husband, Ray, Vandalia, Mo., and Mary Ann Montgomery and husband, Melvin, of Lexington, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; cousin, Nelda McCrory of Columbia, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Evans, Monroe City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant baby; and one brother, William Evans.
    Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City, Mo. The Rev. Tommy Varnadoe will officiate. Burial will be at St. Jude Cemetery, Monroe City.
    Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City.
    Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Rob Karr, Jennifer Evans, Kendall Taft, Benjamin Evans, Joshua Evans, Mitchell Karr, Leah Fusco and Joe Fusco.
    Memorials have been suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Monroe City First Baptist Church Youth Group.
    Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, Monroe City, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
