  • Romney says Obama “stole” from Medicare. The fact of the matter is, Obama has streamlined Medicare by getting rid of excessive payments to insurance companies and providers in the Medicare Advantage program. Tea Party members should be thrilled! Obama cut the costs of a big government program and made it more efficient. Independent analysis has confirmed that President Obama achieved this without reducing benefits to Medicare recipients by a single dollar.
In the Affordable Care Act, some of the savings are used to increase such benefits as annual checkups, mammograms and colonoscopies. These services are important because they can discover illnesses in an early stage, when it is less expensive and more effective to treat them. It keeps people more healthy and lowers the cost of healthcare. The chief actuary for Medicare has reported these changes extend the financial health of Medicare for eight years.
Romney has promised to get rid of the Affordable Care Act and leave Medicare unchanged. Since Obama’s changes extend Medicare by eight years, canceling them will effectively shorten the financial viability of the program by eight years.
Paul Ryan is even more of a hypocrite on this subject. He has slammed President Obama for removing from Medicare the very same payments to insurance companies that Ryan himself removed from Medicare in his budget.
The savings and improvements in healthcare provided by the Affordable Care Act are far too numerous to record here. Millions more covered, no pre-existing conditions, billions saved.
