  • With the Hannibal softball team playing its final regular season game before district play begins in Wednesday, the Lady Pirates lost 17-1 to Palmyra in five innings.
"We only had 2 errors in the game," Hannibal coach Brock Sousa said. "We walked a lot of girls and they had hits."
Hannibal's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gabby York led off the inning with a single and moved to second following Elaina Myers single. Kara Lockwood followed with a double play that moved York over to third. With two outs, Ashley Wilson singled, scoring York, to breakup the shutout.
"It was good to see," Sousa said. "Watching our girls play early , they made some good catches and good throws and they fielded the ball well. I just wish those innings would have carried over into the other ones."
Wilson finished the night 2-for-2 with the Lady Pirates only RBI of the game.
Diamond Mickels took the loss as she allowed 6 of the runs. Mickels allowed one run in each of the first and second innings, but did not make it out of the third inning. Mickels was replaced by Sarah Blankenship with no outs in the third.
Mickels allowed 6 hits and 1 walk over her two-plus innings of work. Blankenship gave up 6 hits and issued 5 walks over the next two innings to put the game out of reach.
Blankenship allowed six more runs in the third to give Palmyra a 12-0 lead. Blankenship worked a scoreless fourth inning before allowing five more runs in the top of the fifth.
Madison Ragar picked up the win for Palmyra. Ragar allowed just one his and one walk in three innings of shutout ball.
The Lady Panther hitters were led by the Martin's. Kelsey Martin reached base in every trip to the plate while scoring three runs while Jamie Martin was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 runs batted in. Alexis Van Nostrand had a two-run triple and scored a pair of runs for Palmyra.
Next up for Hannibal will be a road trip to Holt, which is down St. Louis. The Lady Pirates lost to Holt 17-0 earlier in the year. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
"We have come a long way since that game," Sousa said. "That was an off day and we have played some good teams and seen some good pitching since then. That was our second game of the year and I am excited to see how we do now. We have nothing to lose."
