  • It was a tale of two sets for the Hannibal volleyball team. After taking the first set 25-17 and leading the whole way, Hannibal had to battle during the second set before eventually knocking off Fulton 25-14 to complete the sweep.
“I thought the team played good tonight,” Hannibal coach Amber Riefesel said. “I thought we mixed it up with who hit. Our hitters mixed it up with where they put the ball and that has kind of what we have been working on.”
In the opener, Hannibal (15-4-1, 5-0 NCMC) took and early 5-0 lead behind the serving of Carli Watson. Fulton battled, but was never able to challenge the Lady Pirates. Late in the first set, Hannibal had pushed its lead to 21-11.
Fulton mounted a late charge and closed the gap to 22-17, but that was as close as the Lady Hornets would get. Hannibal took the next three points to claim the opening set.
“I told the girls at the end of the first game that it seemed like Fulton was starting to get a touch on their blocks,” Riefesel said. “They were starting to put some blocks up, so we had to start doing some different things.”
In the second set, Hannibal again took the early lead. But this time the Lady Pirates were not able to hold it as Fulton took a 3-2 lead. It was the Lady Hornets first lead of the night.
“(Fulton) came out kind of slow the first game,” Riefesel said. “But they got into their groove. It just took a little bit.”
Hannibal responded quickly taking a 6-3 lead, but Fulton battled back again. This time the Lady Hornets worked themselves up a 9-7 lead over Hannibal. However, that would be the last time Fulton led as Hannibal again battled back to take a 10-9 lead. Fulton tied it at 10-10, but the Lady Pirates scored three quick points behind the serving of Brooklyn Watson.
Those three points (one of them an ace) were the only service points Brooklyn Watson had in both sets.
From that point on the Lady Pirates extended their lead to 19-13 on a kill from Kay Gieseke. After losing the serve, Hannibal got it back and scored six straight to complete the sweep. Gieseke picked up the final five service points for the Lady Pirates and also recorded an ace.
“I thought Kay Gieseke was hitting it in different spots and trying to mix it up,” Riefesel said. “ I thought she had a good game as far as hitting went.”
Carli Watson led Hannibal with 15 assists while Gabbie Wiley had a team-high 7 kills. Brooklyn Watson (10) and Katherine Allen (13) combined for 23 digs over both games.
Page 2 of 2 - Hannibal will be off for the rest of the week before returning to action on Monday at Troy.
“We only have this one game this week,” Riefesel said. “We don’t have a tournament this weekend so, we are taking a little time off right now to just practice and get our energy back.”
In junior varsity action, the Lady Pirates pulled off another sweep. The JV team (8-1) beat Fulton’s JV 25-12, 25-16. Kaitlyn Edge led the JV team with 8 aces while Erin Coulter finished with 18 assists. Allison DeLaPorte had 7 kills while Caty Bier finished with 4 kills. Elle Evans had 3 kills for the junior varsity team.
“”I thought the JV did really well today,” Riefesel said. “They stayed together and played as a team. Their hits were consistent and I thought they did a really good job at serving. They had quite a few aces tonight, so their serving was really on.”
