  • Pirates come up short

  • While not having the season they all hoped for, the Hannibal tennis team picked up another loss Monday as the Lady Pirates fell 7-2 to Quincy Senior High.

  • While not having the season they all hoped for, the Hannibal tennis team picked up another loss Monday as the Lady Pirates fell 7-2 to Quincy Senior High.
    The Lady Pirates picked up one victory in singles and one in doubles. The singles win went to Courtney Bueler who beat her opponent 6-4, 6-4 while the doubles win came from Kristen Hampton and Bueler. They won 6-2, 6-4.
    The other five singles players for Hannibal all lost. Hannah Stilley (No. 1) lost 1-6, 2-6 while Anna Bastian (No. 2) also fell 1-6, 2-6. At No. 3 singles, Hampton lost 1-6, 1-6 as Mikayla Murphy (No. 5) lost 0-6, 1-6. The Lady Pirates final singles player was Johna Lasby (No. 6) and she fell 2-6, 2-6. In doubles action, Stilley and Bastian (No. 1) lost 1-6, 3-6 while Murphy and Lasby dropped their sets 4-6, 4-6.
    In junior varsity action, the Lady Pirates played some closer matches, but still lost.
    The Lady Pirates closest JV singles match went to Kaitlyn Willing. Willing lost the first set 0-8, but bounced back to win the second set 9-8 and took the tiebreaker 7-5 for the win in what Hannibal tennis coach Jay Johnson called the match of the day. Courtney Northcutt lost 1-8, 4-8 while Alexis Houser lost a pair of close sets 5-8, 6-8. The final JV singles match was Mackenzie Lane. Lane lost her first set 5-8 before rebounding to take the second set 8-5.
    In junior varsity doubles Willing and Northcutt lost 2-8 while Lane and Houser lost 4-8. Bayle Heibel and Devin Nelson fell 5-8, 7-9. The final JV doubles match was Sarah Stilley and Rebecca Sutton. Sarah Stilley and Sutton lost 0-8, 4-8.
    Hannibal will be off today before returning to action tomorrow when the Lady Pirates travel to Mexico.
    Over the weekend, Hannibal hosted its annual Round Robin Invitational and took home third place. Kirksville took the top spot with 34 points just edging out Helias who finished second with 33 points. Troy came in fourth in the four team tournament.
    Hannah Stilley took fourth in the No. 1 singles bracket while Anna Bastian took second among the No. 2 singles. Kristen Hampton (No. 3 singles) and Bueler (No. 4 singles) both finished fourth while Jessica Thomeczek (No. 5 singles) and Murphy (No. 6 singles) both finished third.
    In doubles play, Lasby and Willing (No. 1) finished second while Catie Altheide and Northcutt (No. 2) finished third. Houser and Lane (No.3) as well as Heibel and Haley Yarrington (No. 4) placed third in their respective doubles flights.
