One out away from a win over Fulton, the Hannibal High School softball team allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost 2-1.
"The girls were pretty frustrated at the end of the game that they allowed that to happen," Hannibal coach Brock Sousa said. "Every inning we left runners on base and it was really frustrating. We played really great."
The Lady Pirates out-hit Fulton 7-5, but left seven runners on base, including four of them in scoring position. The worst of it came after taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Gabby York led off the second with a single and stole second base. She then came around to score when Gabby Ewert drove a single to center. Elaina Myers followed with a single and Megan Grimes bunted her way on to load the bases with no outs.
But, according to Sousa, that is when everything fell apart.
The next batter in the lineup struck out for the first out. After a pop up in the infield for the second out, the Lady Pirates had another strike out to end the inning and left the bases loaded.
"We did not capitalize when we had base runners at all tonight," Sousa said. "That is what got us."
Diamond Mickels took the loss for Hannibal. Mickels walked two and struck out none, allowing just two runs.
"Diamond Mickels pitched really great tonight," Sousa said. "She got a lot of ground balls and a lot of pop-ups that we could handle"
Ewert and Kara Lockwood were the only hitters to have multiple hits as both batters registered a pair of singles.
The Lady Pirates will play in the Montgomery Tournament this weekend and then travel to Marshall on Monday for a conference game.
