  • The Hannibal boys and girls cross country team competed at the Springfield Lanphier cross country meet on Sept. 8.
The boys finished 14th out of 18 teams and the girls finished 12th out of 13 teams.
Hannibal Head Coach Charlie Newland said the meet revealed some things for Hannibal.
"I think that the Lanphier race was an eye opener for our kids," Newland said. "The competition is stiff every year that we go there and this year was no exception. However, every race that we run is going to pay off for our kids. We're a young team that is only going to get better as the season progresses."
The future of the team has Newland intrigued.
"I'm excited about the prospects of both the boys and girls as the season continues," the coach said. "Our top kids are good leaders and our young kids seem to be good listeners. There's also friendly competition for spots on the varsity team and that is going to make everyone that much stronger. It is nice being able to coach these kids."
