  • The Hannibal volleyball  team participated in a contest with Bowling Green on Monday and prevailed in straight sets 25-9, 25-7 to improve its  record to 6-2-1.
    Gabbie Wiley led the team with six aces and six kills. Carli Watson had 15 set assists and Kay Gieseke contributed five kills.
    “The girls played their game and controlled the match,” Hannibal Head Coach Amber Riefesel said.  “We played well and will carry this into our first conference match on Thursday.”
    The JV team also played and improved its record to 3-0 after a straight sets (25-15, 25-6) victory.
    Kaitlyn Edge had three aces, Romaine Dyer contributed eight kills, Elle Evans had five kills and Erin Coulter helped them out with 18 set assists.
    The girls team also participated in the St. Charles West Tournament and finished third overall.
    In Pool play Hannibal split with St. Charles West 25-21, 19-25. They beat Fort Zumwalt West 25-22, 25-21 and lost to Francis Howell Central 28-26, 25-14.
    In the quarterfinals, Hannibal beat Wentzville Holt 25-10, 25-17. In the semifinals Hannibal lost to St. Dominic 25-21, 25-17 and in the third place game Hannibal beat St. Charles West 25-21, 25-22.
    Stats for the weekend include Taylor Bennett earning 17 digs, Katherine Allen netting 38 digs, five aces and 14 kills, Brooklyn Watson digging 31 balls and scoring 12 kills, Gabbie Wiley scoring 44 digs and 24 kills, Tessa Bieniek contributing 28 digs, Carli Watson adding 23 digs, six aces, 91 assists and eight kills, Melanie Blase netting 13 solo blocks and 13 kills, Kay Gieseke digging the ball 11 times and earning 29 kills, Jessica Alberts scoring five kills and Kate Millan digging the ball three times.
    “Our team was up and down all day, I saw glimpses of the team we were last year and look to see this more often,” Riefesel said. “We ended on a good note for the weekend.  I look for us to build on the moments when we played as a team and communicated with one another.”
