  • The Hannibal boys and girls cross country team competed in the QND Invitational on Tuesday.
The girls finished ninth out of 15 teams on the days and the boys finished 10th out of 22.
The event comes quickly after the most recent cross country meet, which was on Saturday, Sept. 8, in the Lanphier Invitational.
Hannibal Head Coach Charlie Newland said he felt his team showed improvement.
“I thought we raced better than we did Saturday,” Newland said. “We are still a young team trying to learn how to race. One of the best ways to get experience is by getting out and racing. We were able to do that today and I was impressed with that.”
Newland pointed out No. 1 runner Paul Golian and freshmen Nigel McIntosh and Sean Jones as having particularly good days.
On the girls side, Newland praised his team.
“Rachel Davis and Abbey Jeffries both gave very good efforts. Bailey Welch had a great day too,” Newland said. “Olivia Mack gained her personal record by about a minute and a half, so I was happy to see her gain some confidence.”
The next competition for Hannibal will be a bit later, as the group will be running on Sept. 22 in the Hancock Invitational in St. Louis.
“We will be facing a lot of our district competition,” Newland said. “I want to see how we stack up. It’s a bit of a barometer to see what we can do.”
