  • The Hannibal Pirates continued to see early season success as the group defeated Kirksville 3-1 on Tuesday at home.
Hannibal got the scoring started in the seventh minute when Aaron White scored a goal off of an assist from Tyler Thomure.
Kirksville was able to tie up the score in the 17th minute on a penalty kick from Nathanial Kennard.
The score would be 1-1 going into the half.
Hannibal Head Coach Eric Hill said the first half started out well for the Pirates.
“For the first 20 minutes of the half we played well, we were possessing and controlling the flow of the game,” Hill said. “They had some opportunities but we took over the game from there. Then we gave up the goal in the first half and the guys were pressing too hard, we
tried to score another goal too quickly.”
Hill said trying too hard to score a second goal caused Hannibal to not play as well as they could have.
The mistakes were minimalized in the second half.
“We talked about it at halftime. We can’t worry about giving up a goal, we have to stick together and get back to where we were going,” Hill said. “We did just that, we scored the first goal 33 seconds into the second half. It set the tone for the rest of the game.”
The coach added, “We hung together and played well. This is the best we have done with the two halves together.”
The second goal came in the 41st minute from Scott Cockrell on an assist from Thomure. Thomure then scored a goal of his own in the 49th minute with no assist.
The junior varsity team also played on the night, losing 2-1. Hannibal was winning 1-0, but Kirksville came back and scored twice with both goals coming in the second half.
Hannibal’s goal came from DeShawn McBride.
The next contest for Hannibal is on Thursday at home against Boonville, Hannibal’s second conference match of the season.
Hill said Hannibal needs to go into the matchup with guns blazing.
“We need to go out with a killer instinct, we need to not just go out and hope for the best,” Hill said. “We need to make things happen, just like we did at the start of the second half tonight. We relax sometimes and that gets us into trouble, so we just need to play a full 80 minutes and we will do well. Boonville will be a tough team, but we will be ready for them.”
