  • It was a tough loss for the Hannibal Lady Pirates softball team, but the offense was there.
Rachel Halterman started the game for the Lady Pirates, with Gabby York working as her catcher. Abby Conn closed the game out for Halterman, striking out two.
Offensively for Hannibal, York led the way with four at-bats. She had a double, two base hits, two RBIs and a walk in that frame and also stole two bases.
Elaina Myers also had a big night with a single, a walk and a triple.
Kara Lockwood and Conn also contributed offensively with an RBI. On top of the RBI, Conn had three base hits and a walk.
Another contributer was Sammi Riley, who had five at-bats with a hit, a run and a walk.
Hannibal Head Coach Brock Sousa said the contest Thursday came down to where the balls landed.
“We both had a lot of hits. It was a long game tonight, but Mexico’s hits found our gaps,” Sousa said. “They put together some hits and they were able to get their runners on base scoring.”
The coach added: “We put together a lot of hits tonight but left a lot of girls on base. We had a lot of good hits but they seemed to go to the CF who caught a lot of our line drives. We hit the balls right where the girls were playing, we went hard but couldn’t pull it off.”
The JV team also played on the night, losing 7-0. Sousa said errors on the defensive end led to the loss.
The next contest is at home against Marshall, and to do well in that game Sousa said his girls need to capitalize on their chances.
“I spoke to the girls after the game about it, they understood that we needed to push the ball and it just didn’t get past their defense,”
Sousa said. We have been doing a good job this year with hitting, we haven’t had a lot of strikeouts and we have put the ball in play a lot this year, we just need to capitalize.”
