  • It's a good start to the season for the Hannibal soccer team.
The Hannibal High School boys soccer team defeated Canton by a score of 3-1.
The Pirates got on the board in the first minute of play with a goal from Casey St. Clair off of an assist from Aaron White.
Canton was able to tie the score up in the 22nd minute off of an Austin Hoewing penalty kick.
The contest would go into the half with the score tied up at 1-1, but the tie would not last for long as in the 42nd minute Tyler Thomure shot a goal to put Hannibal on top permanently to put the score at 2-1.
In the 65th minute, Charlie Baumann scored Hannibal's final goal with no assist to clinch a 3-1 opening game for the Pirates.
Hannibal Head Coach Eric Hill said that for the first game, his team played well.
"It was the first game so we have some things we need to work on still," Hill said. "I think for the first game, the guys played alright, it wasn't really our A-game but you don't expect that."
The coach added, "They did a nice job attacking the outside mids, it is something we working on this week and late last week."
Overall, according to the coach, it was a solid effort against a team whose regular season started sooner than Hannibal's.
"On defense we played well, we had a couple of communication errors," the coach said. "It led to some open chances for Canton. Our guys played hard and physical against a solid Canton squad who had played two games."
The wait for the second game won't be quite as long as the wait for the first.
The Pirates are back in action against Elsberry.
For Elsberry, Hill said Hannibal plans to keep doing what worked against Canton.
"We want to do a lot of the same thing," Hill said. "We stress that the guys are trying to keep the vestment of the ball, work the ball around, and use our whole field."
He added, "We want to work from left to right and not just up the middle of the field. If we can do that and open gaps in their defense and do what we did tonight, we will do well."
