  • After reviewing six bids submitted to do maintenance on the grounds of Riverside Cemetery this spring and summer, the cemetery board went with the most feasible.
Keith Anderson, won the job when his offer for $600 a mow per month was approved.
Between April and October, Anderson will mow the cemetery; included in the deal is two mowings in April and May to keep grass as low as possible after wet weather allows it to grow faster.
The extra mowings come at a cost of $350 each, which Board President Peter Danielsons and board member Marilyn Ragan Bowers offered to cover. But that still left the cemetery $700 outside of their spending comfort zone. Picking up that tab, if grant efforts fall through, will be Bob Kennison — leaving the cemetery a $3,500 mowing budget. The normal amount spent annually.
“We need to be practical,” Danielsons said during bid discussions.
The other five bids would have cost the cemetery more than $1,000 per mowing. The highest came from Rule and Sons, LLC at $2,050.
“I think he’s deserving of an opportunity to try and do that work for us,” Ragan Bowers said after addressing Anderson’s previous cares and concern for the cemetery. “There are so many graves up there, that they have no family left because there’s so many older graves.”
Ragan Bowers, who travels in from Linneus, Mo., (two hours away) also said she needed to step up and pay for one of the extra mowings this spring.
“I have nine family members up there and I’m the only one left. So it’s my responsibility, I feel, to look over my family,” she said. “I’m an only child. My family is all gone, I have a few cousins left here, but my cousin that I was close to is buried up there. My grandparents are buried there and their children. I just felt a family obligation to do this.”
