Demolition of the 100-year-old YMCA at Fifth and Center streets in Hannibal.
    What’s
    happening
Acccording to Emory Smashey of Smashey & Sons Construction, which is the demolition contractor on the project, most of the main building has been demolished.
“It’s coming along,” he said. “I hope to have the main building down by tomorrow (Wednesday), or even late today (Tuesday).”
    What’s next
The game plan at the site is pretty straightforward, according to Smashey.
“We’ll clean the wood up and then fill in (the basement and pool areas). Then we’ll take down the back and rest of it. After that we’ll clean it all up,” he said. “The rest of it is pretty stable. We’re not worried it will fall in.”

    Anticipated cost
Smashey & Sons Construction was the low bidder at $60,000.
Since small amounts of “non-friable” asbestos was found in the building are additional costs for the asbestos inspection, testing and to have an asbestos abatement supervisor on hand when areas containing asbestos are removed.
The cost of the asbestos inspection and testing was $1,390 and was paid to Klingner & Associates.
    Who’s paying
Although the building is privately owned, the city of Hannibal is paying to bring the structure down. That action is being taken since its owner, Pastor Clyde Beers, does not have the necessary funds to have it demolished. A portion of the building has already fallen inward, leading to its condemnation earlier this year.
City Manager Jeff LaGarce indicated that money for the project will be taken out of the city’s reserves.
    Projected date for completion
    of this project
The project’s contractor, Smashey & Sons Construction, has 45 days from Nov. 29, when the notice to proceed was issued, to complete the demolition. The tentative completion day now stands at Jan. 13, 2012.
