  • Local law enforcement officers were combing the area just east of Veterans Road in Hannibal Thursday afternoon on the lookout for a man wanted in connection with an alleged assault that happened in that area earlier in the day.
The suspect, a black male, reportedly assaulted a woman near the intersection of West Ely Road and Veterans Road at mid-afternoon. The man, who was reportedly dressed in a black coat and jeans, then fled the scene on foot.
The man initially crossed West Ely Road and ran behind Calvary Baptist Church. He was last seen running into the woods behind the church.
Members of the Hannibal Police Department and Marion County Sheriff’s Department could be seen searching the overgrown areas between Veterans Road and Centerville Road. They were also making contact with residents in the area to alert them to be on the lookout for the suspect, who reportedly may be armed with a kitchen knife.
At approximately 4 p.m., a member of law enforcement indicated that a canine unit was being called to the scene to help with the search.
The extent of the injuries suffered by the assault victim were not believed to be serious.
