  • For the second consecutive year, Continental Cement will be laying off employees. J. Scott Conroy, vice president of manufacturing for the company, acknowledged Thursday morning that 26 employees from its cement operation will be out of a job by the end of April.
“It’s not an easy thing. They’re all good employees who are valuable to our operation. It’s always difficult to have to do that,” said Conroy.
As of late Thursday morning, all the impacted employees had yet to be notified of the company’s plans, according to Conroy.
“We began notification yesterday (Wednesday) of the affected employees and we’re not complete with that,” he said.
The layoff of 13 salary and 13 hourly employees will drop the cement production facility’s total number of workers to just under 150, according to Conroy.
It is possible that the laid off workers could return.
“It (layoff) is due to decreased demand for cement. As the demand for cement increases then we’ll continue to evaluate our staffing at that time,” said Conroy.
