  • Work on the West Ely Road project will resume in early April. Weather permitting, workers with Bleigh Construction are scheduled to return to that area on Monday, April 5, according to Mark Rees, director of public works for the city of Hannibal.
“As this weather dries out now that we’re back into a construction season we will be closing down sections of West Ely again,” he said. “That will be inconvenient, but if we keep making progress like we did before we’ll be in and out of there before anybody knows it and we’ll have a nice, new, shiny street to drive on.”
The construction project kicked off on Sept. 21, 2009.
“I’m very pleased with their progress last year,” said Rees. “Actually we got a little bit farther than I had expected. It’s just we had some good weather right up to November and then it really turned on us fast. I expect them to make good progress this spring, too.”
Barricades used to detour traffic around the construction zone were removed the last week of December, fulfilling a promise Rees had made at the start of the project that the thoroughfare would be open to traffic during the winter months.
