        • Michael Gerson: Baseless fears of Common Core 1:23 am
?Modern conservatism comes in two distinct architectural styles. The first seeks to build from scratch, using accurate ideological levels and plumb lines, so every wall is straight and every corner squared. The goal of politics is to apply abstract principles in their purest form. But there is another type of conservatism, often practiced at the state level, which attempts to build out of flawed, existing materials, resulting in some odd angles and incongruous additions. These conservative...
        • Movie review: ‘Fast & Furious 6’ 1:01 am
You can have a great time getting caught up in the outrageous action of the sixth entry in this money-making machine of a series without having seen any of the previous films. But you wouldn’t understand the nuances of the characters and their interrelationships, you wouldn’t get why they all keep talking about the importance of family, and you wouldn’t really know who you’re supposed to be rooting for, or why.
        • Movie review: Last call for ‘Hangover’ gang 1:01 am
“The Hangover III” takes forever to get started and then never wants to end. Farewells are always tough, but the end it is, as the “Wolf Pack” embarks on one final off-the-rails road trip.
        • The Readers’ Writers: YA author Scott Blagden 1:01 am
Scott Blagden worked in real estate after being shown the exit door when a college prank found the wrong audience – apparently humor wasn’t in the offering that semester. Today, he lives on Cape Cod, is still in the real estate biz, is the father to two teenagers and he has just seen his first book published.
        • Twins miss mother at graduation 12:25 am
High school graduation was a bittersweet night for one family Thursday, May 23, at Hannibal High School. Twins Travis and Rosemary McDanel arrived with their dad, Mark, who explained their mother, Laura McDanel, died two years ago after a traffic accident.

        • Public warned about tree crew scams 12:21 am
Hannibal City Manager Jeff LaGarce has issued a warning to Hannibal residents whose trees and homes were damaged by the May 20 storm. He advises the public to hire only licensed, credible contractors for tree debris removal or home repairs. The city is concerned about opportunists coming to Hannibal to take advantage of storm victims.
        • Free meals, tree removal offered 12:14 am
Hannibal residents are being offered free brush and tree removals from the storm damage. Two volunteer groups are working with the city to cut up brush and trees in yards and move it to the curbside, to be hauled away by the City of Hannibal.

President Obama addressed many important issues in his speech Thursday (transcript here), some of which I’m writing about for Sunday’s column.  The speech also included some remarkable political theater involving Obama and a protester in the audience. • Voter Fraud is a Fraud May. 23, 2013
The Ohio Secretary of State ordered that any suspicious ballot out of the 5.6 million cast in Ohio be investigated. They found only 135 suspicious ballots, and those votes weren't organized in favor of one party or another. The entire notion that there is massive voter fraud is false. Republicans used the fear of fraud to introduce voter ID...

        • Jodi Arias trial: Jury deadlocked on death penalty verdict May. 23, 2013
PHOENIX — The judge in the Jodi Arias murder trial declared a mistrial in the penalty phase Thursday after the jury reported for a second time that it was deadlocked on whether to sentence her to life in prison or death for killing her boyfriend in 2008. The judge scheduled a retrial for July 18. A new panel likely will be seated to try again to reach a decision on a sentence — unless the prosecutor takes death off the table agrees to a life sentence.
