Mary Elisabeth Long Walsh and Thomas John Walsh of Hannibal celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 24, 2009.
The couple were married Sept. 24, 1949, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in St. Louis.
Their attendants were Lorraine Martin, sister of the bride, and William Pearson, friend and companion of the groom.
Mary’s parents were the late William and Adele Querin Long. Tom’s parents were the late John T. and Nora Smith Walsh.
The children of the couple are Tom N. and Brian T. Walsh, both of Hannibal, whose wives are Joan Dittmer Walsh and Jacquline Robb Walsh, respectively.
Their grandchildren are Brian B. and Kathleen M. Walsh.
Tom has retired as proprietor of the A.F. Smith Roofing Company and Mary is a housewife. They have traveled extensively worldwide and are currently happy to visit or entertain family or friends.
Mary continues to pursue her hobbies of flower gardening, oil painting and reading. She has been very active in many aspects of Hannibal life.
Tom, whose track career started in 1929 when he won the city and area school championship in the 50 yard dash at the Public School Stadium in St. Louis, continued to compete as an adult in the Senior Olympics for some 20 years until the age of 90. He obtained the status of World Class Sprinter, winning 108 gold medals, setting 66 records and four state records, including national and world records in the long jump. He is now content to coach or assist coaching at any level of competition if the opportunity permits.
